The Racers

August 21, 2018

as mothers hollered

and moths collided

the sweaty, mashed-hair kids

raced once more

through the streetlights’ fresh dots

then said their goodbyes

and pedaled slowly home

not yet understanding

how quickly summers go

the sounds of horns and sirens

drowned out by rain beating on the window in my room

as gray light shoves through the darkness

i watch determined drops race down each pane

such ambition has always eluded me

Dormant Fields

my young daughter laughs

as we race through dormant fields

spring is drawing near

Suburbia

January 26, 2018

outside my dark window

a nearby dog howls

at a distant moaning siren

while i meander

through a familiar dream

new light

warms the frosted

window pane

a fluid sun

drips onto

the slowly rotting sill

painted white by fresh snow

daydreaming schoolchildren

and fogged up windows

through the crack under my door

Rawboned Branches

long rawboned branches

stretch far through a freezing fog

to scratch the sky’s back
